I am a soil scientist by trade, education and experience with an emphasis on soil fertility and crop nutrition. I have 20 years experience in irrigated crop production with fruit, vegetable and hay crops. My extension work focuses on sustainable and organic commodity crops, such as alfalfa/hay production, sweet corn and field corn production and fruit crops, soil health issues, such as salinity, alkalinity and selenium management in soils and water and hops production.
Soil Health Initiative: I am working on the soil health initiative; this is a farmer-initiated project that involves approximately 30 area farmers, the NRCS and other extension personnel. The goal of the project is to have demonstration and research plots on farms around the Uncompahgre Valley that follow sustainable agricultural practices with an eye to long-term production by building soil health, such as the use of cover crops for nitrogen production and organic matter additions to build soil structure, tilth and productivity.
Sweet Corn Work: In conjunction with Bob Hammon, TRA Extension Entomologist we are testing several organic seed treatments against the seed corn maggot.
Selenium Working Group: I am on the Science and Research committee that evaluates proposals for reducing selenium in ground and surface waters in the Uncompahgre Valley.
Hops Production: I am helping to coordinate the 3rd Annual Hops Production Workshop to be held on July 9th in Longmont. I have 10 years experience of hops production research in conjunction with growers throughout the Tri-River Area. I am also working with area hops growers on clover cover crops for nitrogen production for hops fertility and early season plant treatments, such as the effects of cutting or not cutting the first shoot growth on crop yields.
